PHIXER for TV dialog / broadcast fold: mono fold and dialog intelligibility vs music beds
Living-room TVs, hotel sets, and many broadcast downmix paths still fold stereo to a single speaker or a narrow center. Dialog that feels clear in headphones can lose body under music beds when L+R fights. Stereo score, ambience, and FX under voice can soft-drop on mono fold. Practical habit: true L+R sum on the print or LoRo bounce, then polarity and timing, then residual frequency-aware phase rotation only if a stereo bed must stay stereo. Phase check with free PHIXER before delivery, not only after a viewer complaint. It is not a dialog cleaner, not a loudness box, and not a substitute for a real mono listen on a small speaker.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a dialog denoiser, not a time-aligner, not a stereo widener, and not a substitute for polarity, delay matching, or a true mono / TV-speaker check. Use it after hygiene, when residual spectral cancellation remains on a stereo bed you must keep stereo under dialog. Phase check with PHIXER before broadcast delivery.
TV / downmix mono fold and dialog intelligibility (failure modes)
- Mono TV / downmix fold. Dialog body softens, music beds thin, stereo FX swish when the set or AVR sums L+R. Habit: true L+R sum on the print / LoRo / stereo bounce before delivery.
- Dialog vs music beds. Beds that feel supportive in headphones can mask consonants and midrange on fold. Mute the bed briefly; compare intelligibility with and without the stereo bed under a hard mono listen.
- Radio cousin. Broadcast fold-down is the same L+R story as a mono TV path. Cousin guide: PHIXER for Radio / FM Fold-Down.
- Club / PA cousin. Dancefloor mono-sum is the same fold habit as a TV downmix. Cousin: PHIXER for Club System.
- Mastering chain cousin. Where phase check sits after EQ/compression and before limiter. Cousin: Where PHIXER sits in a mastering chain.
Fast TV dialog / broadcast fold audition (about 60 seconds)
- Sum L+R on the stereo print, LoRo bounce, or monitor controller mono. Listen to dialog body, bed low-mid, and ambience under voice. Do not mute one side to "hear the problem."
- A/B stereo vs mono. Note what disappears on fold: S and SH consonants, bed thump, wide score under lines.
- Mute wide FX / Haas / side-heavy verbs and music beds briefly under a dialog pass. Note which path thins intelligibility on the TV fold.
- Confirm on a small speaker or single earbud (TV / hotel-set proxy), then again after any loudness / limiter pass, not only before cleanup.
- Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights with PHIXER if the stereo bed must stay stereo. Prove any change with mono A/B before delivery.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. True mono / L+R listen on the TV delivery path
Hard L+R sum on the stereo print or LoRo. Habit cousins: radio / FM fold-down and mono compatibility checklist.
2. Polarity if a path flips
Boom vs lav, dual ADR takes, music bed vs dialog stem. Flip Ø when body returns. Guide: polarity invert vs continuous phase rotation.
3. Timing / delay-align before spectral tools
Nudge dual mics, ADR doubles, and dual-path beds a few ms. Spectral rotation is not a substitute for timing.
4. Prefer correlated dialog and lows for the TV path
Keep critical dialog and low-mid correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold. Related: club system mono-sum and mastering chain placement.
5. Only then residual frequency-aware phase rotation
If a stereo bed must stay stereo under dialog and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle rotation can help. Phase check with PHIXER before delivery. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the YouTube tutorial and intro.
TV dialog / broadcast fold path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in TV speaker / hotel set | Fine in headphones, thin on the set | True L+R + small-speaker proxy |
| Stereo beds under dialog | Bed soft-drops; dialog loses intelligibility | Mute bed briefly; check fold with and without |
| LoRo / stereo print for TV | OK in mix room, hollow on living-room mono | Hard mono bounce check |
| Boom + lav / dual ADR | Body gone when both play | Polarity then timing |
| Haas / wide score under lines | Swish or cancel on fold | Less width in lows; correlated center |
| Radio / FM cousin of the same master | Fine on TV, soft on mono radio | Radio fold mono check |
| Club PA cousin of the same master | Fine on air, soft on dancefloor | Club system mono check |
| Mastering / delivery bounce | Phase check missed before limiter | Mastering chain placement |
When not to reach for PHIXER
- Wrong polarity on boom vs lav or dual ADR (flip Ø first).
- Obvious attack misalignment (nudge first).
- You only need a mono dialog print, not a stereo bed under voice.
- Loudness, dialogue IQ, or TV-encoder problems (wrong tool).
- Honesty list: When not to use PHIXER.
